At Black Hair Salon, we prioritise the health and shine of your hair and scalp, offering top-notch treatments and expert advice to ensure you get the best out of your colouring experience.

Coloured hair requires special care because the colouring process can make it more porous and prone to dryness, breakage, and dullness. Proper hair care can help maintain the integrity of your hair, ensuring it stays strong, shiny, and vibrant. Here’s our comprehensive guide to hair care after colouring, focusing on both scalp health and hair health.

Here is the guide to healthy hair post-colouring!

Scalp Health: The Foundation of Beautiful Hair

A healthy scalp is the foundation for achieving and maintaining beautiful, shiny hair. Ensuring your scalp stays in prime condition is especially important after coloring. Post-coloring care is not just about preserving the vibrancy of your new hue but also about nurturing your scalp, which is often neglected. When the scalp is well-cared for, it provides the ideal environment for hair growth, ensuring your strands remain strong, glossy, and resilient.

How to Maintain

1. Regular Cleansing:

Choosing the right shampoo for your hair and scalp condition is crucial for the maintenance of your beautiful mane. For coloured hair, you may want to look for shampoos specifically formulated for coloured hair. If you have a sensitive scalp, you may look for shampoo specifically for that. These products often contain moisturizing ingredients and are designed to maintain the scalp’s natural balance while preserving your hair colour. Sounds like a tough job? Fret not, if unsure, just head over to your favourite Hair Salon to ask the Professionals to assess your hair and scalp to recommend what best suits you.

2. Scalp Massages:

Incorporating regular scalp massages into your routine can significantly benefit your scalp health. A gentle massage helps stimulate blood circulation, which improves the delivery of nutrients to your hair follicles. This increased circulation promotes healthier hair growth and enhances the overall condition of your scalp. You can use your fingertips or a scalp massager to gently work in circular motions for a few minutes each day.

3. Scalp Serums and Tonics:

Applying the right scalp serums or tonics can help maintain a balanced environment in your scalp. Just like our facial serum, there are different types of Serums and Tonics addressing specific scalp conditions, for example, hair Growth/ hair loss, hydrating, dandruff etc. Choosing the right ones depends on your scalp condition and needs.

For dry and irritated, you may look for products specifically designed to address that. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, and glycerin can provide deep hydration and soothe your scalp. Glycerin, commonly used in skincare, functions as a force that pulls in and holds moisture. It works by attracting moisture from the air and transferring it to the scalp. When the scalp is well-moisturised, it becomes less prone to dryness, irritation, and flaking. These serums can be applied directly to your scalp, where they will work to restore moisture and keep your scalp feeling comfortable.

4. Avoid Over-Washing:

Washing your hair too frequently can strip your scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. If you’re living in a hot and humid climate like Singapore, not cleansing our scalp daily might lead to other scalp problems like fungal growth. Our general rule of thumb is washing your hair once a day, particularly at night to remove the dirt build up of the day from sweating. On days that you don’t seem to sweat or stay in a cool and dry space, you could skip washing.

5. Hydrate and Nourish from Within:

Proper hydration and nutrition are also key factors in maintaining scalp health. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your scalp hydrated from the inside out. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids can also support scalp health. Foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, and leafy greens provide the nutrients your scalp needs to stay healthy and vibrant.

Hair Health: Keeping Your Hair Luscious

Ensuring the health of your coloured hair is key to maintaining its shine and vibrancy. With the right care and attention, you can keep your hair looking vibrant, soft, and free of split-ends. Here’s a detailed guide on how to keep your coloured hair in top condition. By focusing on hair health, you could also extend the lifespan of your hair colour.

How to Maintain

1. Use Colour-Safe Products:

When it comes to maintaining a vibrant hair colour, there are two types of shampoos that can make all the difference: colour-depositing shampoos and colour-safe shampoos.

Colour-Depositing Shampoo

Colour-depositing shampoos, like Napla N. Color Shampoo and Milbon Color Gadget Shampoo, which you can get at Black Hair Salon, are designed to enhance and maintain your hair colour. These shampoos contain pigments that can refresh, brighten, or neutralise your hair’s hue, helping to keep your colour looking fresh between salon visits. Since they’re ammonia-free, they’re a great choice for those who want to avoid permanent dyes or for anyone who’s experienced a sensitivity to hair colour treatments. For such Colour depositing shampoo, we would recommend using 2 to 3 times a week, depending on the colour and condition of your hair. Feel free to check in with your favourite hair professional at our salon for more accurate advice when you next visit.

Colour-Safe Shampoo

On the other hand, colour-safe shampoos protect your hair and its colour without adding extra pigments. They use special polymers to create a hydrophobic layer around each strand, preserving the vibrancy of your colour. This protective barrier locks in your hair colour, preventing it from fading. It also helps to repel excess water that could strip away the dye.

2. Minimise Heat Styling:

Heat styling tools like blow dryers, curling irons, and straighteners can cause significant damage to coloured hair. The high temperatures can strip your hair of moisture and weaken its structure, leading to breakage and colour fade. To protect your hair, minimise the use of heat styling tools and always apply a heat protectant spray before styling. On the days that you’ll be home nesting away, just blow dry your hair! Doing so is important because wet hair is weaker than dry hair and more susceptible to damage. When hair is wet, proteins form weaker hydrogen bonds instead of protein-protein bonds, making it easier to damage. Additionally, wet hair absorbs water and swells, making the hair shaft more porous and allowing water to penetrate and cause damage. Lastly, wet hair is more prone to stretching, which can cause the hair to break or split. Unlike a rubber band, stretched hair doesn’t snap back into shape.

3. Regular Trims:

Regular trims are essential for maintaining the health and appearance of your coloured hair. Aim to trim your hair every 3-4 weeks for men’s and pixie cuts, and, 6-8 weeks to remove split-ends and prevent them from travelling up the hair shaft. Keeping your ends neat and healthy will make your hair look fresher and more vibrant, and it will help maintain the overall integrity of your hair.

4. Hair Masks:

Incorporate deep conditioning treatments into your weekly hair care routine to provide intense hydration and nourishment. These homecare masks can help maintain the elasticity and shine of your coloured hair, keeping it soft and manageable. Come by to your trusted professionals at Black Hair Salon to get a recommendation on the best hair masks for you! However, do note that hair masks are only going to moisturise your hair on the outside. They do not possess the power to hydrate your hair from within. Think of it as a very strong moisturiser, at the end of the day, it will get washed off as well.

5. Protect Your Hair from UV Rays:

Exposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause your hair colour to fade and damage its structure. Protect your hair by wearing a hat or using hair products with UV protection when spending time outdoors. UV-protective sprays or leave-in conditioners can help shield your hair from the sun and keep your colour vibrant. You can get UV-protectant hair products from us after your hairdo! The brand we use is napla Mieufa UV Cut Floral Hair & Skin Perfume Spray!

6. Gentle Hair Care Practices:

Handle your hair with care to prevent unnecessary damage. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair when it’s wet, as wet hair is more susceptible to breakage. Avoid using harsh towels to dry your hair; instead, use a soft microfiber towel or an old T-shirt to gently squeeze out excess water. Additionally, be mindful of the hair ties you use, opting for those that are gentle and don’t cause breakage.

7. Nourishing Professional in-salon Hair Treatment:

Our Japanese Nourishing Hair Treatment is specifically designed to revive and hydrate coloured hair. This deep-conditioning treatment infuses your hair with essential nutrients, replenishing moisture and restoring its natural softness and shine. By incorporating this treatment into your hair care routine, you can counteract the drying effects of hair dye and keep your locks luscious and healthy.

Black Hair Salon Tips for Hair Care

We also recommend getting bond treatment to strengthen the bonds when your cuticles are opened up during your hair services. This helps it regenerate and keep its strength, preventing any damage done to your hair!

In-salon hair treatments are specially designed to be more intensive and are applied exclusively by hair professionals due to its ingredients and processes.

Unlike homecare hair masks which only provide conditioning to enhance the overall appearance of your hair. These in-salon treatments work on both the interior and exterior of the hair, fortifying the protein structure, hair fibers from within, while nurturing the outer cuticles.
